XVIII LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA FESTIVAL OF KANSAS CITY

Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. Program stars at 11 a.m.

 

Admission: $6.00 per person.   Passes to the five films are now available at the Glenwood Theatre for $25.00 and will be available at the Rio Theatre on the first day of the festival.

 

Program is for persons 18 years or older

 

September 5:   “El Regalo” (The Gift)  – Chile, 2008 – Director: Cristián Galaz and                             Andrea Ugalde – Running Time / Duración: 108 min. – Cast / Reparto:                           Nelson Villagra, Delfina Guzmán, Julio Jung, Gloria Münchmeyer, Jaime Vadell, Héctor Noguera

            

  This is the story of three close friends Francisco, Pacheco and Tito. Francisco (NelsonVillagra) recently retired is going through a difficult time. To make him feel better, his friends (Julio Jung and Jaime Vadell) give him a trip for seniors to the thermal waters of Chillan . This film is a romantic comedy mixed with amusing situations and delightful characters, a film that will be an enjoyable trip.

September 12: “Arráncame la Vida” (Tear this Heart Out) - México/Spain 2008

Director:  Roberto Sneider – Running Time / Duración: 107 min.  Cast /Reparto: Ana Claudia Talancón, Daniel Gimenéz Cacho, José Ma. de Tavira, Joaquín Cosio, Camila Sodi, Irene Azuela, Isela Vega.

 

Based on the novel by Mexican writer Ángeles Mastretta, this is the story of a love triangle between a woman (Ana Claudia Talancón), the general (Daniel Gimenéz Cacho) that taught her the power of sex, ambition and corruption, and the man (José Ma. De Tavira) who showed her the freedom of passion. It has been considered to be an account of  the life of Maximino Avila Camacho, Mexican politician from Puebla and brother of then President of Mexico Manuel Avila Camacho.

September 19: “Lo mejor de mi”(The Best of Me)  Spain / 2007

Director: Roser Aguilar – Running Time / Duración: 85 Min. – Cast / Reparto: Marian Alvarez, Juan Sanz, Lluís Homar, Carmen Machi

           

Winner of four awards, the story focuses on Raquel Álvarez (Marian Alvarez), a young woman that wonders what would happen if she did no find anyone who would love her.  When Raquel moves in with Tomás (Juan Sanz), she will have to ask herself what she would be willing to do for love.  She will discover how beautiful and at the same time how difficult it is to truly love someone.

September 26: “La Cámara Oscura” (Camera Obscura)  – Argentina 2008 –

Director: María Victoria Menis – Running Time / Duración:  85 Min. – Cast /  Reparto:  Mirta Bogdasarían, Patrick Dell’Isola, Fernando Armani, Silvina Bosco

 

Based on a story by Angélica Gorosdischer, the film tells the story of Gertrudis (Mirta Bogdasarían) a Jewish woman that has always been seen as ugly. She marries a man that is looking for someone that takes care of him, his house and bears his children. Over the years Gertrudis becomes almost an invisible woman; until one day, someone with a different “gaze” discovers her singular beauty.

October 3:       “Cuando Rompen las Olas” ( When the Waves Break) – Colombia 2006

Director: Riccardo Gabrielli R. – Running Time / Duración: 95 Min. –  Cast / Reparto: Alejandra Borrero, Lucy Martínez, Riccardo Gabrielli, Pablo Trujillo, Mabel Moreno

 

In an old chest belonging to his grandmother, Daniel (Pablo Trujillo) finds a forgotten photo album that reveals a secret. This will lead him along with his brother Tomás (Riccardo Gabrielli), grandmother Sofía (Lucy Martínez), and Clara (Mabel Moreno) a young nurse, into an adventure that will touch their lives forever. Their goal is to make a far away dream come true.
