Who We Are

ORIGEN OF THE NAME:

The name Hidalgo was adopted in honor of Padre Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest and hero of the War of Independence of Mexico, which occurred in 1810.

HOW AND WHY THE ORGANIZATION WAS FORMED:

In 1979 Sociedad Hidalgo was incorporated in the states of Kansas and Missouri as a 501© (3) non-profit cultural organization in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The society was formed as a result of the desire on the part of a small local group that included Mexicans and persons of Mexican descent, as well as non-Hispanic Americans, to get together in a social environment to share presentations and various cultural activities, thereby maintaining a social and cultural link to Mexico.

Before long, the idea was extended to promote and share the Mexican culture and traditions with the general community. At that time, Sociedad Hidalgo was the only organization of its kind in Kansas City, which attracted the attention of other Hispanic Americans, who soon joined the society.
